The Problem

Info on Cataracts

What is it?

A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye (the lens is the clear part of the eye that helps to focus light).

Symptoms

  • Cloudy/blurry vision
  • Faded Colors
  • Poor vision at night
  • Light sensitivity
  • Seeing double
  • Blindness if left untreated

Who is affected

Cataracts can affect anyone, but the highest risk is seen in older individuals, particularly those over the age of 65. Studies have also shown that Africans and African Americans are at an increased risk of developing cataracts at an earlier age and experiencing more severe vision impairment.

The Cataract Crisis in East Africa

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in East Africa, disproportionately affecting those in impoverished and rural communities. Limited access to healthcare, a severe shortage of skilled ophthalmologists (medical doctors who specialize in treating the eye), and a lack of specialized surgical equipment make treatment unattainable for many. As a result, countless individuals are left visually impaired, unable to work, attend school, or contribute fully to their communities. This preventable condition perpetuates cycles of poverty and dependence, despite the fact that cataract surgery is a simple and highly effective procedure.

35% of East Africans live in extreme poverty

30-50% of blindness in the region is caused by cataracts

3000-10,000 new cases develop annually per million people

1-2 ophthalmologists per 1 million people
