Cataracts have a profound and debilitating impact on many communities in East Africa, but EastAfroSight is committed to bridging the gap. With a comprehensive plan in place, we aim to resolve the challenges surrounding cataract treatment and restore sight to as many individuals as possible.
We have a three part solution that will alleviate this burden
1. Providing essential surgical equipment

2. Recruiting volunteer ophthalmologists

3. Educating local clinical staff on prevention and treatment methods

The first solution is providing essential equipment, as the lack of essential medical equipment is a key barrier to treating cataracts in East Africa, contributing to the high number of individuals affected by preventable blindness. EastAfroSight is addressing this issue by providing the necessary tools for successful cataract surgeries, including phacoemulsification machines, micro eye surgery kits, artificial lenses, and other critical materials.
The surgery that will be done is phacoemulsification, a quick, minimally invasive procedure that takes just 10-20 minutes to complete. With only a small incision, which rarely requires stitches, the recovery time is fast, and most patients are able to return home the same day. The results are overwhelmingly positive, with 96% of patients experiencing improved vision. Therefore, with the proper machines, we can restore sight to hundreds of individuals daily.
The surgical process as a whole for the cataracts is swift, efficient, and safe, so providing these low-income communities with the right equipment will give thousands of people the gift of sight

Our second solution focuses on recruiting volunteer ophthalmologists who will dedicate their time and expertise to our cause. We have access to a strong network of skilled ophthalmologists and are actively recruiting them for this project. East Africa faces a severe shortage of ophthalmologists, with only 1-2 specialists for every 1 million people in many regions. These volunteers will be instrumental in bridging this gap, ensuring that thousands of East Africans gain access to life-changing care. Their involvement will bring world-class expertise, ensuring that every surgery is performed with precision and care, helping us make a lasting impact on the region’s eye health.
Our third solution focuses on educating local clinical staff on effective prevention and treatment methods. Volunteer ophthalmologists will train them in proper follow-up techniques to monitor patients’ healing progress and teach strategies to prevent cataracts, reducing future risk. This knowledge transfer will empower local teams to continue providing high-quality care long after the volunteer ophthalmologists leave, creating sustainable, long-term benefits for the community.
